Duties & Responsibilities
The Managing Director is a key member of the leadership team responsible for technology at the University. The Managing Director will lead the newly formed group, Academic Technology Services.

The Managing Director, Academic Technology Services is responsible for providing:

• exemplary service to faculty and students,
• superior value through effective use of resources and staff,
• deeply seated trust in the Academic Computing operation, and
• a culture of ongoing innovation.

The specific responsibilities that flow from this can be divided into three key areas:

1. Services to faculty and students
2. Leadership for innovation in educational pedagogy
3. Integration of research, educational, and library technologies.

Services to faculty and students

• Deliver technology platforms, tools and services that help faculty with their teaching and research.
• Foster a culture of continuous innovation with a focus on enhanced service to faculty in the academic IT organization.
• Build trust through a strong and effective partnership between faculty and the new Academic IT organization and with other academic
support organizations across campus.

Services include:

Tools for Teaching and Learning:

• Learning management system for course web sites (Harvard iCommons)
• Collaborative learning tools (wikis, blogs, surveys, collaboration spaces)
• Course media collections and lecture videos
• Course administration and set-up
• Sectioning
• Grade submission (FAS only)
• Computing Spaces (formal and informal physical spaces designed to allow for computing):
• Design
• Management
• Training
• Software and Hardware
• Other specialized equipment

Outreach and Consulting (for faculty, students, and staff):

• Instructional support and consulting for faculty and teaching staff
• Guidance for use of copyrighted course materials
• Resource and support for student developers
• Resource and support for student coursework, including students with disabilities
• Professional development and employment opportunities for students
• Research computing support and consulting
• Liaison to other University services

Leadership for innovation in educational pedagogy

• Provide thought leadership and vision in educational technology’s role in innovative pedagogy across the University.
• Develop and coordinate events and programs to inform faculty on trends in instructional technology.
• Participate appropriately in external groups to enhance Harvard’s position as a leader in academic IT.
• Engage students in a meaningful way to understand their needs and use of academic IT services.
• Participate, as directed, in Academic IT-related development and fundraising activities.

Integration of research, educational, and library technologies

• Work with academic IT organizations across the University to provide coordinated services to faculty.
• Provide technology support and work collaboratively with the Harvard libraries reorganization process.
• Represent Harvard in the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) Consortium and lead the efforts to ensure a Harvard’s
successful use of the facility.
Basic Qualifications

Higher Education and Instructional Technology Experience and Skills

• Demonstrated success at developing and implementing innovative solutions to current and future pedagogical needs.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of current issues and resources in instructional technology, educational computing, and the digital future.
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of pedagogy, technology, and collaboration.
• Experience in developing and delivering academic IT training to faculty and staff.
• Passionate about the role of learning and the contribution of educational pedagogy in higher education and society.
• Formative and effective classroom teaching experience.
• Significant experience in complex, higher education settings.



Education

Advanced degree required; Ph.D. preferred but not required.
Additional Qualifications To be considered for this role, candidates must have the following experience and skills:

Leadership – participate as a member of the UCIO leadership team and
contribute to major plans and decisions that effect the entire UCIO
organization; set the direction for the Academic computing organization;
ensure organizational alignment with advancement of that direction and
led by example, setting a tone of transparency, integrity, and service;

executive level audience, clearly and concisely, both written and in
presentations; cultivate relationships, gain credibility with diverse
constituencies, and collaborate effectively within a decentralized
environment; manage and lead significant change management efforts.

Management

organization; ensure the continued growth and development of both;
mentor, coach, and actively provide feedback; deliver thoughtful,
constructive performance reviews to team.

Strategic execution –
develop and communicate organizational short and long-term goals and
strategy; formulate options and initiatives toward long term solutions,
adapting and prioritizing as necessary; foster an environment where
innovative solutions and approaches are pursued.

Financial
accountability – develop and manage a substantial annual budget,
continually ensuring resources are applied to highest and best purpose;
apply ROI analysis to decision
making consistently; participate in capital budget planning.

Documented success at carrying out the core responsibilities outlined
above (Organizational Leadership, Management effectiveness, Strategic
execution, Financial accountability)

• Proven success at providing superior service. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as the ability to present to University leadership. .
