Duties & Responsibilities
Join the Berkman Center as a web applications developer responsible for the development of custom web-based applications and tools in Ruby and PHP. The successful candidate will design and develop web-based applications, database back-ends and build UIs. The position will also provide project management support for some application development projects and create technical and end-user guide documents. The developer will need to keep current with tools and technologies of open source software development and database architecture. He or she will interface with clients and advise and support other developers on their projects. As with all Berkman Center positions, this is a term appointment funded through 12/31//2011 with strong potential for continuation based on funding and institutional need.



Basic Qualifications BS in computer science, engineering, or equivalent. 4+ years of web application development experience.
Additional Qualifications Must have at least 3 years work experience with Ruby on Rails (ROR) and PHP. Full life cycle development experience (technical design through implementation) required; experience with agile software development principles, including test-driven programming is highly desirable. Skills in Object-Oriented Design, Application Architecture and Web Technologies (HTML, JavaScript, AJAX, JSON, XML, CSS); skills in JS toolkits (jQuery, EXTJs, OpenLayers, etc.); Experience with RDBMS (MySQL, Postgres) and noSQL DBs (couchDB, mongoDB); good understanding of MVC Architecture; strong command of web standards and best practices; experience with web/REST services with Rails, UNIX/Linux, Apache; knowledge of Perl and/or shell scripting; excellent communication and technical skills; demonstrated ability to take appropriate initiative and drive the development process; demonstrated project planning and time management skills; ability to work independently, assume leadership roles and work as part of a team.
