We're looking for Area Managers to join our growing Retail team in the United Kingdom.

We have several Area Manager vacancies covering the Midlands and South England, United Kingdom.

The Midlands locations include:
- Northampton, Corby, Milton Keynes.
- Chester, North Wales, South of Manchester
- Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire

The South locations include:
- Guildford, Horsham, Crawley, Aldershot
- Wokingham, Sevenoaks, Tunbridge, Brighton.

Shell Downstream encompasses all the activities necessary to transform crude oil into petroleum products and petrochemicals, and deliver them around the world.

We operate the world’s largest single-brand retail network, serving around 25 million customers per day from more than 40,000 service stations in around 100 countries. The range of innovative products on offer is constantly expanding, supported by extensive research and development activities.

Products such as low-sulphur fuel, LPG, and more recently, differentiated fuels including Shell V-Power, V-Power Racing, V-Power Diesel, Pura and Optimax, are tailored to meet growing customer requirements for improved engine and environmental performance. Over 10,000 sites also have Shell-branded convenience stores attached.

We've recently agreed to acquire 254 retail sites in a deal aiming to bring quality fuels within easier reach of UK customers. The move will enhance Shell’s position as a leading fuels retailer in the UK, making it an exciting time to join the Shell Retail team. Shell are now working hard to hire the right people to help deliver a strong customer value proposition, which includes a new coffee and hot food offer at sites throughout the UK.

As an Area Manager you are responsible for managing the performance of 30 – 35 retail sites via 4-5 multi site operators. You will have the responsibility for managing a business and the outcome of your business decisions. You’ll be managing the relationship between Shell and retailers at cluster/site level, and ensure consistent delivery of our customer value proposition.

In detail, we’ll expect you to:

Identify gaps in all aspects of service, personnel and site performance for your area & ensure retailers implement all areas of the customer value proposition and comply with the site operations/HSSE standards
Advise and implement through retailers the Shell-recommended tools, processes, marketing initiatives to help them deliver the customer value proposition at the retail site and develop business for the mutual benefit of both the retailer and Shell
Maximise all sales potential and deliver improved performance through operational excellence, by coaching and motivating retailers while protecting Shell’s interests and reputation
Develop and maintain a strong HSSE culture
Set retailer company cluster contracts and business plans to deliver sales and cost targets
Manage and maintain a retailer master plan within your territory through retailer assessment
Ensure that retailers train and develop their staff, and understand the importance of people delivering the customer value proposition
Review retailers’ P&L statements, and support them in the development of action plans to close performance gaps
Ensure delivery of a competitive pricing position through fuel pricing procedures
Plan and conduct site visits
Participate in UK business-wide projects

As a strong team member with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, you’ll have significant experience in retail sales, business development or a similar operational environment. Experience of shaping and implementing marketing plans in an operational retail environment would be an advantage. Ideally educated to degree level, you’ll have first-class business acumen including an understanding of retail HSSE standards, economics, principles and processes and the ability to apply these.

Specific experience should include:

A proven track record in driving sales and profit
Effective management of stakeholder relationships
Implementation of standard processes and identifying ways to improve these.
You’ll also need a valid UK driving license in order to visit the sites.
